Citation: Fried, S., Greenberg, A. 2012. Lipocalin 2: a "sexy" adipokine that regulates 17Beta-estradiol and obesity. Endocrinology. 153(4):1582-1584. Interpretive Summary:
Technical Abstract: In this article we review the findings of Guo et. al. (Endocrinology, 153: 1183-1193) that the protein, Lipocalin 2 is more highly expressed in subcutaneous adipose tissue than in gondal tissue of female mice. Of particular interest is that the paper by Guo et. al. observed that ablation of the Lipocalin 2 gene resulted in reduced serum estrogen levels. We posit that the alterations in Lipocalin 2 expression may modulate estrogen levels by reducing the expression of aromatase in adipose tissue. We suggest that in the future researchers should investigate whether Lipocalin 2 expression regulates aromatase expression. We also note that since different laboratories have made disparate observations on the risk of developing obesity in lipocalin2 deficient mice on different dietary regimens that investigators should be aware of possible differences among the different diets.
