Interpretive Summary: Stink bugs are important direct pests of numerous crops, including apples and peaches. Researchers at the USDA-ARS laboratory in Wapato, Washington, in collaboration with Washington State University, Pullman, summarized information on taxonomy and distribution of the stink bugs in the state of Washington. They determined new state records for many stink bugs, including several plant pests, and more than doubled the species list for Washington, from 23 to 47. This information will help entomologists and pest managers assess potential risks to crops from known pest species that occur in the state.

Technical Abstract: Froeschner (1988) records 23 species of stink bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) as occurring in Washington state. Based onmaterial primarily housed in the M.T. James Entomological Collection at Washington State University, the number of species is increased to 47. Species recorded by Froeschner (1988) but not found in our collections are: Apateticus crocatus (Uhler), Chlorochroa rossiana Buxton and Thomas, and Tepa rugulosa (say). species recorded from Washington state for the first time are: Apoecilus bracteatus (Fitch), Perillus bioculatus (Fabricius), Podisus maculiventris (Say), P. pallens (Stal), P. placidus Uhler, P. serieventris Uhler, Zicrona caerulea (Linnaeus), Brochymena quadripustulata (Fabricius), B. sulcata Van Duzee, Acrosternum hilare (Say), Aelia americana Dallas, Banasa euchlora Stal, B. tumidifrons Thomas and Yonke, Chlorochroa congrua Uhler, Coenus delius (Say), Cosmopepla lintneriana Kirkaldy, C. uhleri Montandon, Dendrocoris pini Montandon, Euschistus servus (Say), E. tristigmus (Say), E. variolarious (Palisot), Holcostethus limbolarius (Say), Neottiglosa sulcifrons Stal, N. undata (Say), Prionosoma podopioides (Uhler), Tepa yerma (Rolston), Trichopepla grossa (Van Duzee), and Amaurochrous vanduzeei Barber and Sailer.
