Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Reticuloendotheliosis (RE) designates a group of pathologic syndromes in several avian species caused by retroviruses of the reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) group. In consideration of the increasing amounts of new literature on this virus and the disease, it has not been possible to cite all publications in this chapter. Hence the literature is cited selectively, and readers are advised to refer to other reviews. Representative strains of the REV group include the replication defective T strain and the non-defective A strain. A number of other REV strains have also been isolated from various avian species, including from some of the endangered species. The disease syndromes associated with RE include 1) a runting disease syndrome, 2) chronic neoplasia of lymphoid and other tissues, and 3) acute reticulum cell neoplasia. Disease manifestations are less common despite the widespread nature infection. Both runting disease and the chronic neoplastic disease are caused by the non-defective REV strains, and do occur in nature. The acute reticulum cell neoplasia is induced only by strain T and is not known to occur in nature.
