Technical Abstract: This review addresses the current understanding of the plant immune response and the molecular mechanisms responsible for systemic acquired resistance as well as the phenomenon of "priming" in plant defense. A detailed discussion of the role of salicylic acid in activating the plant transcription co-activator NPR1 is provided. NPR1 plays a central role in transcriptional regulation of plant defense gene expression. The concept of priming is discussed in terms of the epigenetic alterations regulating its expression and the potential of priming plant immunity in terms of crop protection, particularly how it relates to reducing allocation costs of plant disease defense responses. Novel concepts such as second generation induced resistance are presented and a short description of the historical development of commercially available plant defense activators is given. Prospects for future use of PDAs in cereal crops are discussed.
