Interpretive Summary: Soybean is the most important oil seed crop in the United States. In order to meet the increasing demand for oil both for human consumption and also as a renewable fuel, higher yielding oil crops and higher oil yields per unit area are needed. ‘NC- Miller’, a soybean cultivar developed and released by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service will help to address this need. NC-Miller is a high yielding and high oil late maturity group V non-transgenic soybean cultivar. In yield trials conducted in North Carolina and also in the USDA regional tests for maturity group V, the yield of NC-Miller was comparable to the check cultivars and its seed oil concentration was significantly higher. NC-Miller is also resistant to soybean mosaic virus and moderately resistant to sudden death syndrome. All of these attributes make NC-Miller a good alternative for growers of conventional soybean varieties.
Technical Abstract: ‘NC-Miller’ soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was developed and released by the USDA-Agricultural Research Service in 2011 as a high yielding and high oil late maturity group V, conventional cultivar. NC-Miller is an F5 selection from the cross of cultivars ‘Santee’ and ‘Holladay’. In the North Carolina Official Variety Trials for late maturity group V (2007-2010), yields of NC-Miller were either greater than or equivalent to other conventional cultivars. Also, in yield trials conducted by the USDA-ARS soybean breeding program in North Carolina from (2003-2008) and in the USDA Preliminary/Regional tests (2008-2010), the mean yield of NC-Miller was comparable to the check cultivars. NC-Miller has high seed oil concentration (216g kg-1) in comparison to check cultivars ‘AG 5606’ (205g kg-1), ‘5601T’ (204g kg-1) and ‘Osage’(197g kg-1). It has determinate growth habit, purple flowers, grey pubescence, and tan pod walls. It is resistant to soybean mosaic virus and moderately resistant to sudden death syndrome [caused by Fusarium solani mart.) Sacc. F. sp. glycines]. NC-Miller’s attributes of high seed oil concentration and good yield provide an added value to soybean crushers.
