Citation: Interpretive Summary: The bacterium Gluconacetobacter hansenii is one of few bacteria that are able to synthesize and secrete pure cellulose as it grows and is considered to be a model organism for studying cellulose synthesis. Using high throughput seqeuencing technologies a high quality draft assembly of the genome of this bacteria has been completed and was found to be approximately 3.6 million bases in size. Annotation of the genome identified 3,351 genes comprising 84% of the genome. From this annotation, the cellulose synthesis pathway could be identified and can be used for further studies to understand how this bacteria is able to produce cellulose. This can have implications in improving cellulosic ethanol product. The project has been deposited in GenBank under accession number CM000920 and project identification number 43711.
