Interpretive Summary: The completion of the genome sequence in an elite inbred line, BTx623, and the ongoing re-sequencing of other accessions important for grain, sugar, and biomass production promise to speed up the functional genomic studies in this important versatile crop. Genetic stocks and mutants are needed to firmly establish the in vivo functions of predicted genes in genome and to isolate genes underlying important agronomic traits. We have rescued and registered a classical collection of 507 sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) genetic stocks (Reg. No. PI66327 through PI663723), originally curated by the late Dr. Keith F. Schertz. This collection is consisting of, among others, lines with distinct morphological and physiological attributes, irradiated mutants, cytoplasmic male sterility standards, and translocation isolines. This core of diverse and valuable genetic resource has been historically employed in basic genetic studies in sorghum. This assembly of genetic stocks displays a wide range of phenotypes in morphology, height, maturity, and vegetative and reproductive development. This collection may also contain physiological and biochemical variations that could be of interest to sorghum and related cereals (corn, sugarcane and pearl millet) research communities. The availability of this diverse and unique genetic stock collection in a systematic and easily accessible format to the public will immensely aid the functional genomic studies and lead to accelerated improvement of sorghum as a multiple-purpose crop. Combined with advanced genomic tools, these genetic stocks, promise to reveal fundamental pathways that make sorghum tolerant to drought/heat stresses and highly productive under diverse environmental conditions.
