Interpretive Summary: Peronospora is a genus of plant pathogens that belong to a class of water moulds. The study of plant pathogens and their movement in the field can be greatly enhanced if there is a way to identify an individual isolate. DNA markers represent an excellent method in which to characterize fungal isolates. In this paper a type of DNA markers called SSRs (Simple Sequenced Repeats) were developed for the mould species Peronospora tabacina.

Technical Abstract: Eleven polymorphic microsatellite loci for the oomycete obligate biotrophic pathogen Peronospora tabacina of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) were developed. Loci were characterized using 44 isolates of P. tabacina collected from tobacco plants growing in Europe, Near East, and North and South America. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 5. Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.1 to 1.00 and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0.04 to 0.74 for these loci. These microsatellite loci provide a sufficient set of markers to perform population genetic studies of P. tabacina and possibly other species in the genus Peronospora.
