Effects of yeast extract and vitamin D on turkey mortality and cellulitis incidence in a transport stress model.American Association of Avian Pathologists. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: We evaluated yeast extract (YE) and vitamin D (VD) in turkeys treated with dexamethasone (Dex) at intervals designed to simulate transport stress during a 3 stage growout. YE but not VD decreased early mortality (P = 0.001) and mortality at wk 7 (P= 0.02) and wk 12 (P = 0.002) but not wk 16. Cellulitis lesions consistent with Clostridial Dermatitis (CD) were seen in 8/21 birds that died and were decreased by YE during weeks 13-16 (P = 0.04). These data suggest that transport stress plays a role in CD and that YE may help counter the effects of stress. |
