Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Farm-based raw materials are increasingly used in the development of amphiphilic materials that have potential applications in the production of a variety of consumer and industrial products, including lubricants. Raw materials of interest include: starches, proteins, fats, oils, and sugars. These raw materials are modified into amphiphilc compounds through chemical, thermal, and enzymatic methods, and their surface/interfacial properties investigated. Farm-based amphiphiles adsorb on surfaces and lower friction, surface tension and oil-water interfacial tension. They also display significant solubility in water, and are also effective at emulsifying a variety of formulated and unformulated seed oils. As a result, farm-based bio-surfactants can be used to produce fully renewable and environmentally benign emulsions for use in a variety of applications, including lubrication. This presentation will review recent developments of bio-based amphphilic materials from various farm-based raw materials. In addition, recent results aimed at the correlation of amphiphilic properties with the chemical structures of farm-based amphiphiles will be discussed.
