Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Symbiosis simply means "living together" and in its narrowest form can mean two species deriving mutual benefit from the association. Recent studies have made evident that insect associations with microorganisms can range the gamut from casual associations to obligate or context-dependent mutualisms, where the cost-benefit of the relationship switches based on environmental conditions. This chapter will explore symbiotic interactions between microorganisms and insects at different levels and will discuss how these relationships can have direct consequences on insect fitness and ultimately be the primary drivers behind pest insect population outbreaks.
