Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Molecular research on plant roots is expanding at a high rate. Molecular research commonly pools all of the roots on a plant and extracts the DNA, or RNA, or proteins, or amino acids from this pool. It has been demonstrated that there are 8 classes of root, and those that have been tested have been shown to be functionally distinct from each other (i.e. different RNA, protein and amino acid patterns). The published bases for these 8 classes of root and some of their defining functionality are presented in order, based on the International Society for Root Research's framework for root system taxonomy.
