Tumor Diagnosis Manual: The Differential Diagnosis of Lymphoid and Myeloid Tumors in the Chicken, 1st edition. Jacksonville, Florida: American Association of Avian Pathologists, Inc. p. 1-84. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Some strategies to aid the diagnosis of lymphoid and myeloid tumors of the chicken are presented. The process has become more complicated due to an expanded menu of syndromes and diseases that must be considered. However, a variety of advanced technologies are now available to supplement traditional pathological criteria. The judicious use of appropriate tests and procedures, as discussed herein, provides a stable platform on which increasingly definitive diagnoses can be made. Although this manual focuses on the processes and procedures involved in tumor diagnosis, such tools also require the skillful interpretations and judgments inherent to the art of diagnosis. Even though a reference laboratory may contribute data from advanced tests, the field clinician may be in the best position to correctly interpret all of the data. The differential diagnosis of lymphoid and myeloid tumors in chickens is an evolving science. Continued improvement of diagnostic methods will result from advances in knowledge of the respective tumors, from application of current knowledge to the development of useful tests, and from practical field experience. |
