Technical Abstract: Three insect susceptible cultivars (‘Beauregard’ [B63], 'Beauregard' [B94-14], and 'SC 1149-19'), two insect-resistant cultivars ('Charleston Scarlet' and ‘Ruddy’), and 7 regional genotypes from the 2009 National Sweetpotato Collaborator Trials were evaluated for insect resistance in replicated field trials at Charleston, SC. Overall, the highest levels of resistance were for the resistant check cultivars ‘Ruddy’ and ‘Charleston Scarlet’. Five entries had significantly less overall insect damage (ie., higher percentage of undamaged roots) than did the three susceptible checks (B-63, B94-14, and SC1149-19). These same five sweetpotato entries had a significantly lower WDS index (Wireworm, Diabrotica, Systena) rating than ‘SC1149 19’. All genotypes had significantly less damage by flea beetles and sweetpotato weevils than did ‘SC1149-19’.
