Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Straighthead is a physiological disorder of rice worldwide, which results in sterile florets and reduces grain yield. Among several options, cultivar resistance is the most effective way for its control and identifying straighthead resistant germplasm is essential for breeding resistant cultivars. A total of 990 accessions selected from the USDA rice core collection were evaluated for straighthead in the induced conditions with application of 6.7 kg ha-1 monosodium methanearsinate (MSMA) to soil in Stuttgart, USA in 2003. Then, 303 accessions selected from this evaluation were tested in the natural conditions in 2008 of Corrientes, Argentina. Straighthead had severely and frequently occurred in the natural conditions, so it is reserved for the research in Argentina National Institute of Food Technology (INTA). The comparative study concluded that 1) straighthead performs more severe and more uniform in the induced than natural conditions, 2) resistant accessions identified in the induced conditions are reliably resistant in the natural conditions and 3) moderately susceptible accessions in the induced conditions could be resistant or moderately resistant in the natural conditions. Therefore, the induced conditions using the MSMA play a reliable and important role in study on straighthead in rice. |
