Title: The Oil of Matico (Piper aduncum L.) an Alternative for the Control of Cacao Frosty Pod Rot (Moniliophthora roreri) in Peru

Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The cacao production in many Latin American countries is significantly reduced by frosty pod rot disease (Moniliophthora roreri) and yield reductions are to the extent of over 90% in many cases. The strategies of control includes: phytosanitation, genetic resistance, chemical and biological control. However, the oil of matico rich in Dilapiol (antifungal ether), can be good alternative to control this disease. The experiments were carried out in laboratory and in field to determine the effectiveness of the matico oil (MO) against M. roreri(Mr). To test the best concentrations of matico oil (MO) experiments were setup with MO concentration of 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.5% and 1.0% using the technique of potato dextrose agar. Percents inhibition of mycelium per day was recorded. In another study to assess the anti sporulant effects of matico oil (MO) (0.5% and 1.0%) in comparison with cuprous oxide (0.6%), urea (10% and 15%), extract of Brugancia aureah (10%) and a control without any product; using the technique with discs of sick pods was implemented. The colonies forming unit by cubic centimeters ( were recorded. In the field trial, MO (0.5% y 1.0%), cuprous oxide (0.6%), extract of B. aurea (10%), Trichoderma ghanense (1x108 and a control without any product were evaluated. In this study sporulation percent on the pods was recorded. In laboratory study matico oil (MO) at all concentrations inhibited the growth of M. roreri. : MO 0.5% reduced sporulation by 71.6%, while 1% MO concentration reduced sporulation by 95.6%; urea 10% reduced sporulation by 96.6% and at 15% is reduced by 99.9% compared to the control. There was no effect of Datura and Trichoderma ghanense on inhibition of sporulation. In the field trial the best treatment was MO 1.0%, in reduction of sporulation of M. roreri.
