Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: When glyoxal or formaldehyde were allowed to react with zein (corn protein) the resulting electrospun fibers had been shown to have improved solvent resistance and physical properties. These reagents formed a cross-linked network with the zein protein. It was found that the properties of the as-spun fibers could vary dependent on the amount of time the zein and the cross-linking reagent were allowed to react before spinning. The reaction of zein with either glyoxal or formaldehyde was followed by using rheological techniques. The amount of time it took for the elastic and viscous modulus to cross (gelation time) was monitored while varying reagent, concentration, temperature and solvent. Fibers were then produced at various times during the reaction and the resulting fiber properties were determined.
