Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Currently, rice blast disease and sheath blight disease are the two major destructive fungal diseases worldwide. Both diseases are controlled by precise deployment of major and minor genes integrated with effective cultural practices worldwide. Continued evolution and adaptation of the pathogen have often challenged the effectiveness of deployed resistance genes in commercial cultivars. The Molecular Plant Pathology program of USDA-ARS Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center is assigned to develop the genetic/pathological tools and resources for rice breeding. The current accomplishments of the MPP program including resistance gene identification, characterization and mechanisms of co-evolution of host-pathogen were presented.
