Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: DNA sequence-based methods for identifying pathogenic and mycotoxigenic Fusarium isolates have become the gold standard worldwide. Moreover, fusarial DNA sequence data are increasing rapidly in several web-accessible databases for comparative purposes. Unfortunately, the use of Basic Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) against GenBank as an identification tool is in some ways becoming less reliable, as GenBank cannot possibly validate all submitted sequences and annotate them for accuracy. Also, many isolates associated with GenBank sequences are unavailable to researchers. To address this problem, we released the first version of FUSARIUM-ID in 2004, a partial translation elongation-factor 1-alpha database of Fusarium on a BLAST server. All sequences in the database are from isolates that are available for distribution from major culture collections (FRC, CBS, NRRL). An updated version of the database was released in late 2008, with additional features including cross-reference to strain information and downloadable sequence data from multiple loci. In this talk, I will discuss these resources, and outline our ultimate goals to create a comprehensive bioinformatics and knowledge resource that facilitates collaboration and integrates culture collection resources, phenotypic and genotypic data, and experimental protocols.
