Interpretive Summary: The objective of this research is to determine the forage productivity of an experimental cereal rye (Chason) against several check varieties under low N conditions (40lbs/ac). Check varieties utilized in the trial are Elbon, Maton, Oklon cereal ryes and wheat. Performance results of trials conducted in 2008 and 2009 indicate Chason is a competitive producer of hay and forage when compared to checks under normal environmental conditions. Under drought or high stress conditions, Chason has been observed to exceed the productivity of check varieties. The public release of Chason is anticipated following a third and final set of trials to be conducted in 2010.

Technical Abstract: Research performance trials were conducted with an experimental cereal rye (Chason) and tested against check cereal rye varieties Elbon, Maton, Oklon and wheat under low N conditions of 40 lbs/ac. Earlier evaluations had identified Chason as a superior and productive cereal rye when evaluated under severe drought or high stress conditions. Performance trials conducted in 2008 and 2009 indicate Chason is a competitive producer of hay and forage when compared to checks under normal environmental conditions. Additional performance trials are under way in El Reno, OK and Parsons, KS. Public release of Chason is pending following a third and final set of trials to be conducted in 2010.
