Citation: Griswold, T.L. 2009. A New Subgenus and Species of Neotropical Hylaeus from Costa Rica (Hymenoptera: Colletidae). Journal of Hymenoptera Research. 18(2):178-182. Interpretive Summary: Bees of the genus Hylaeus area polyester bees, creating cellophane linings in their nests which are usually in stems. They are found throughout the world in both temperate and tropical environments. A distinctive new species from Costa Rica is described in memory of Roy Snelling, who contributed much to our understanding of this diverse group.
Technical Abstract: A new Neotropical subgenus of Hylaeus, Snellingella, is described, with Hylaeus amplus new species from Costa Rica as the type species. Characteristics to separate the new species from other Costa Rican Hylaeus are provided.
