Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Finfish account for approximately 30% of animal protein in the human diet, and in some countries/societies, this value can exceed 80%. With declines in capture fisheries, contaminant issues and recent dietary guidelines recommending greater consumption of fish, there is a pressing need to develop ways in which to ensure access to safe, high-quality and sustainable finfish resources. Remarkably, aquaculture (fish farming) has rapidly increased in terms of world-wide production. However, for this trend to continue, technical, production, and sustainability issues must be addressed. This presentation provides an overview of aquaculture production strategies, their advantages and disadvantages, and current efforts to improve efficiency. |
