Interpretive Summary: There are no reliably effective controls for the Mexican rice borer on sugarcane in South Texas, and the pest is spreading to rice-growing areas of Texas and Louisiana. A small-plot insecticide test was conducted in South Texas during the summer of 2008 to identify compounds that suppress injury to sugarcane by the Mexican rice borer. All six insecticides reduced injury, particularly flubendiamide. Technical Abstract: There are no reliably effective controls for the Mexican rice borer on sugarcane in South Texas, and the pest is spreading to rice-growing areas of Texas and Louisiana. A small-plot insecticide test comparing six insecticides was conducted in South Texas during the summer of 2008 to identify compounds that suppress injury to sugarcane by the Mexican rice borer. The insecticides were tebufenozide, novaluron, gamma-cyhalothrin, flubendiamide, rynaxypyr, and B cyfluthrin. All of the insecticides reduced bored sugarcane internodes by >69%, but the most effective was flubendiamide which reduced bored internodes by 88.3%. |
