Isolation of Chromanone and Isobenzofuran Derivatives from a Fungicolous Isolate of Epiccocum purpurascens. Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society. 28(5):877-879. Interpretive Summary: Fungi that parasitize and kill other fungi offer a potential source of novel antifungal agents useful to agriculture and medicine. The fungus Epicoccum purpurascens NRRL 37031, encountered as a colonist of a wood decay fungus in Florida, was examined for its ability to produce antifungal agents and other bioactive metabolites. New chromanone and isobenzofuran metabolites are reported, along with a known isobenzofuran metabolite originally reported as a potent antioxidant. Technical Abstract: Chemical studies of an organic extract of Epicoccum purpurascens NRRL 37031, isolated from a wood decay fungus in Florida, led to the isolation of two new metabolites, 7-methoxy-4-oxo-chroman-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester (1) and 1,3-dihydro-5-methoxy-7-methylisobenzofuran (2). Two known isobenzofuran metabolites were also obtained. The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of NMR and MS data. |
