Isolation of an Isocoumarin and an Isobenzofuran Derivatives from a Fungicolous Isolate of Acremonium crotocinigenum. Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society. 29(4):863-865. Interpretive Summary: Fungi that parasitize and kill other fungi offer a potential source of novel antifungal agents useful to agriculture and medicine. The fungus Acremonium crotocinigenum NRRL 40192, encountered as a colonist of a wood decay fungus in Hawaii, was examined for its ability to produce antifungal agents and other bioactive metabolites. An isocoumarin derivative is reported as a new metabolite showing potent antifungal activity against the mycotoxin producing fungus Fusarium verticillioides. Technical Abstract: 6,8-dimethoxy-4,5-dimethyl-3-methyleneisochroman-1-one (1) and 5,7-dimethoxy-3,4-dimethyl-3-hydroxy-isobenzofuranone (2), have been isolated from an organic extract of the fungicolous fungus Acremonium crotocinigenum (NRRL 40192). The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of NMR and MS data. Compound 1 showed potent antifungal activity against Fusarium verticillioides. |
