Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This presentation will summarize genomic resources available for studies of genetic control of infectious disease resistance in animals. It will then review data collected in our and collaborators’ labs of genetic control of swine resistance to viral infections, e.g., Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine circovirus (PCV2) as well as to Salmonella bacterial infections. The talk will review past results that identified potential biomakers for PRRS resistance and future plans for mapping genes which control PRRS resistance/susceptibility. It will end with functional genomic studies that have provided insights on genetic pathways that control early immune responses to viral and bacterial infections, and that result in altering persistence and in stimulating or preventing effective protective responses. It will highlight opportunities that genetic resistance versus susceptibility studies provide to identify alternate disease and vaccine response pathways.
