Technical Abstract: In this work, we studied the viscosity and gel formation in the tri-component system, starch/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP). Starch and poly(acrylic acid) at 5% aqueous solution formed a synergistic mixture at 60/40 ratio. The addition of a small amount of PVP caused the formation of gel particles. In contrast, starch and PVP in solution showed no significant interactions between them in all proportions; yet, the addition of PAA also caused gel formation. The corresponding data for poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-iodine (PVPI) were also obtained. The addition of PVPI to a starch: PAA solution first increased the solution viscosity; further addition of PVPI caused gel formation. Similarly, starch and PVPI at 5% aqueous solution formed a synergistic mixture at 80/20 ratio; the addition of a small amount of PAA first caused a decrease in viscosity and then an increase. These observations are consistent with the formation of interpolymer complexes and specific interactions among the polymers.
