Technical Abstract: Aquaculture has become a significant component of global fish production contributing about 380% in 2003 of fish products for human consumption. The proportion is likely to increase further due to increased demand of fish for food and stagnated capture fishery. Paralleling to the growth of aquaculture production has been the increased concern of governments and private sectors about the potential adverse effect of aquaculture on the environment, in spite of the fact that aquaculture is a necessary activity to meet world food demands and environmental damage by aquaculture is no greater than that of many other human activities of equal or smaller scale. Therefore, aquaculture industry needs to respond to environmental concerns proactively by voluntarily adopting codes of practices that contain Best Management Practices (BMPs) designed to minimize adverse environmental impacts. This publication, Best Management Practices for Responsible Aquaculture, contains nine chapters describing production statistics, production methodology, resource use, environmental issues, social issues, food safety issues, environmental management in aquaculture, codes of practices and development of best management practices.
