Technical Abstract: This review, "Advanced biorefineries for production of fuel ethanol," is a chapter in the Wiley book entitled Biomass to Biofuels: Strategies for Global Industries and is intended to cover all major ethanol production processes to date. The chapter discusses current fuel ethanol production processes, the problems encountered in these processes, and compares current technology with advanced technology being piloted in fuel ethanol biorefineries. The cost to produce a gallon of ethanol for each of the ethanol production facilities is compared based on the feedstock costs, the efficiency of the process, and the value of the coproducts obtained. Sustainable world production of fuel ethanol and future use of cellulosic ethanol production processes are also summarized.
