Mycoscience. 49(5):281-290 Interpretive Summary: Fungi are a diverse group of organisms that cause serious diseases of crop plants and forest trees but are also used to control disease-causing organisms. Many new species of fungi have yet to be discovered and characterized for their use in controlling diseases. In this research seven new species of fungi were discovered that grow in association with other fungi and thus are considered mycoparasites. These new species are named, described and illustrated in both their sexual and asexual states. This research will be used by foresters, plant pathologists and ecologists to study the interactions of these fungi with the pathogens on trees with the possibility of using them as biological control agents. Technical Abstract: Seven species of the genus Cosmospora collected in Japan are reported in this article. Among them, Cosmospora japonica is described as a new species. Cosmospora henanensis, C. rubrisetosa and C. triqua, all of which are known only from their type localities, are added to the Japanese mycoflora. Other species, C. chaetopsinae-catenulatae, C. diminuta and C. peponum are new records for Japan. Additional, distribution records are given for Cosmospora species hitherto known in Japan. |
