Technical Abstract: 1. This review intends to present the part of the EU funded Project FP6, SSA: DIABR-ACT: Harmonise the strategies for fighting Diabrotica virgifera virgifera. Faculty of Agriculture in Osijek, Croatia, coordinated the part of the DIABR-ACT project concerning “resistance breeding” and reveal the latest research achievements regarding resistance breeding against corn rootworm. 2. Investigations in Europe on the development of plant resistant mechanisms against WCR are just beginning. In 2003 the European Commission made decisions on certain measures aimed at slowing down the spread of the WCR in Europe. Nevertheless, this pest has already been found in 18 countries of the European region. In order to establish a sustainable production system, evaluation of sources of plant resistance and tolerance in maize cultivars is essential. 3. Various methods were utilized in order to collect information: several electronic bibliographical databases have been searched; questionnaire survey regarding resistance breeding in Europe was done; and the workshop held in Osijek, Croatia, brought together internal and external experts, stakeholders, SMEs from plant breeding institutes and companies, farmers representatives, and research groups interested in resistance breeding in European maize cultivars. 4. This review comprises the most important information regarding maize resistance breeding accomplishments against WCR and emphasizes challenges for the scientists in future research activities.
