Interpretive Summary: Turneriella comprise a unique group of spirochete bacteria. They have been found as contaminants in standardized media, having broad impact on Leptospira strain collections throughout the world. This chapter is a taxonomic description of the genus.

Technical Abstract: Turneriella are morphologically similar to Leptospira. They are unique within the Leptospiraceae by having distinct DNA sequence composition as demonstrated by DNA hybridization analysis, and a unique 16S rRNA sequence profile. In addition, they are distinguished by having a single periplasmic flagellum inserted subterminally in the cell, as compared to two in other members of this family. Although bacteria in this genus have similar nutritional requirements, i.e., they are aerobes that consume long-chain fatty acids and long-chain fatty alcohols as carbon and energy sources, they grow quite slowly. These bacteria have been obtained as contaminants of standard Leptospira media; their pathogenic potential is unknown.
