Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Biosynthesis of phytoalexins is an active mechanism utilized by plants to protect against pathogens. Phytoalexins from wild plant species may be more potent than those produced in cultivated plants. Two terpenoid substances from the pathogen-infected plant Malva sylvestris L. were isolated using the methods of extraction, column chromatography and HPLC. The compound was an orange-colored substance with HPLC retention time 12.32 min. This compound, in a turbimetric bioassay for toxicity to the plant pathogen Verticillium dahliae, gave an IC50 value of 24 micrograms/ml; a violet-colored substance was also isolated; it had a RT 15.57 min and an IC50 value of 30 micrograms/ml to V. dahliae. Both substances appear to be derived from delta cadinene and are similar to phytoalexins from cotton and kenaf. The dynamics of formation of both substances in Malva sylvestris L. was studied. After inoculation with V. dahliae, maximum levels of these compounds in the plant were achieved by 72 hrs. |
