Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The overuse of breastpumps in the United States is noted and a case report is offered in which standard professional advice led to inappropriate substitution of pumping for breastfeeding and subsequent breastfeeding failure. Professionals are cautioned that advice to use a breastpump is not without consequences and should be based on careful consideration of the challenges faced by an individual breastfeeding dyad – particularly in the period before breastfeeding is well established.
