Interpretive Summary: Poisonous plants and the secondary compounds they produce cause large economic losses to the livestock industry throughout the world. Catastrophic losses have occurred in certain regions of the U.S. when changing conditions alter the typical forage availability and create unusual management challenges. Aberrant environmental conditions, changing land uses, lack of understanding, increased grazing pressure, etc. all contribute to situations that result in poisoning of livestock. This chapter briefly reviews important poisonous plants of the United States and provides current information on the distribution and ecology, toxicology, conditions of grazing and prevention and management of selected poisonous plants. Basic concepts that can help reduce risk of poisoning by plants are reviewed.
