Interpretive Summary: Smooth bromegrass and meadow bromegrass are the principal bromegrasses grown for pasture and forage in the United States and Canada. Meadow bromegrass has seventy chromosomes that have not been fully characterized. A chromosome staining procedure (C-banding) was used in this study to aid in delineating and classifying the different chromosomes of meadow bromegrass. Using this procedure, it was possible to group all chromosomes into eight different groups based upon chromosome size, morphology, and C-banding stain patterns. It was not possible to fully differentiate all chromosomes. The similarities of meadow bromegrass chromosomes to previously published smooth bromegrass chromosome descriptions confirmed previous reports indicating a close relationship between the two species.
Technical Abstract: Chromosomes of meadow bromegrass, Bromus riparius, are mainly median and similar in morphology. C-bands were located at telomeric regions of the chromosomes. Majority of the chromosomes had telomeric bands either in one or both arms. Approximately 10 chromosomes had no C-bands. Karyotype of meadow bromegrass includes 3 different types of satellite chromosomes. Unfortunately, it was not possible to identify all the chromosomes of the meadow bromegrass and to match the pairs of homologous chromosomes by using C-banding patterns and chromosome morphology due to similarity in C-banding patterns and chromosome morphology. Based on the results of this study, morphology and C-banding patterns of the chromosomes of the meadow bromegrass are similar to other Eurasian Bromus species with small chromosomes included in the section Pnigma of genus Bromus. The similarities confirm previous reports indicating close relation among species included in the section.
