Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The soybean genome has undergone at least two, and maybe more large-scale duplication events. This ancient polyploidy of the soybean genome has resulted in complex arrangements of homeologous regions. Regions of high sequence identity and with genes in conserved order and content remain in places. In other regions a great deal of fractionation has taken place with many genes deleted or translocated. The gene space of soybean may be limted to a quarter to a third of the whole genome space. The clustering of repeats in the genome and the presence of entire arms of heterochromatin supports this. The forthcoming whole-genome sequence for soybean will provide additional details on the structure and organization of the genome, and will resolve many remaining questions about the evolutionary relationships among duplicated genes and gene families.
