Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Mass-releases of fruit fly parasitoids can result in significant pest population suppression. However, the costs are sometimes prohibitive and a number of research projects have centered on providing 1) the best possible candidates for the expensive procedure and 2) minimizing the procedural costs. A review of these projects covers the following: a) influence of abiotic and biotic factors on species distributions; b) the evolution of ovipositor length and host vulnerability; c) the use of host-radiation to minimize handling; d) the isolation of unused mass-reared fly larvae (e.g., females) for hosts; e) the multi-species exposure of hosts; and f) the use of cellular endosymbionts to generate all-female parasitoid lineages.
