Technical Abstract: Recently we showed the design, synthesis, characterization, and usefulness of 2-(dimethoxy-phosphorylmethyl)-oxiranylmethyl]-phosphonic acid dimethyl ester that was generated from 3-chloro-2-chloromethylpropene (Polymer Preprints 2005, 46(1), 583-584). This monomer was grafted onto cotton fabrics (fleece, nonwovens, plain weave, and twill) to provide add-on values that ranged from 8 to 25%. Vertical flame tests ASTM D-6413-99 of the treated fabrics passed the test requirements. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) values ASTM D-2863-00 of treated fabrics (8-18% add-on) ranged between 28.5 and 31.5%. Another low cost mono-phosphonate [(2-methyl-oxiranylmethyl)-phosphonic acid dimethyl ester] monomer was prepared from methallyl chloride. In this paper we will discussed the effects of laundering on textile flammability as well as a preliminary antimicrobial properties will be presented.
