An optimum rearing system has been developed for coffee berry borer and this system was used to produce large numbers of several natural enemies for biological control. The United States interest in the discouragement of narcotic production is the impetus to help develop economical and biological alternatives such as coffee production in coffee producing countries.
Technical Abstract: An automated system for the mass rearing of coffee berry borer, CBB, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) was developed at the National Biological Control Laboratory, USDA-ARS in the United States. A novel cell design of 32 cell trays (30 x 14.6 x 1.1 cm) and an automated diet dispenser were developed and adapted for the modified artificial diet Cenibroca. The CBB colony was maintained using this rearing system for 70 continuous generations without affecting its activity, fecundity, weight, and size. A single liter of diet cost $ 2 dollars approximately and was enough to produce 45,000 effective females and males with a sex ratio of 7.4: 1.
