Interpretive Summary: Nebraska is the leading producer in the United States of great northern dry beans. Common bacterial blight, rust, bean common mosaic, bean common mosaic necrosis and white mold, are some of the most economically important diseases that reduce bean yield and seed quality in Nebraska. We have developed ABC-Weihing, a great northern common bean germplasm line that was bred specifically for enhanced resistance to common bacterial blight, broad resistance to numerous strains of the highly variable rust fungus and complete resistance to all strains of the bean common mosaic virus. In addition, ABC-Weihing has partial avoidance to white mold due to its semi-upright plant architecture. This is the first bean with this combination of desirable attributes. The multiple disease resistance traits of ABC-Weihing reduce the risk of disease and lowers cost of production for growers. Scientists, particularly plant breeders from universities, experiment stations and private industry will benefit from these breeding lines when they use them to improve their local varieties. ABC-Weihing will be useful for improving resistance to common blight and the other diseases in great northern and pinto bean market classes. Technical Abstract: Great northern common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm line ABC-Weihing was developed specifically for enhanced resistance to common bacterial blight (CBB), a major disease of common bean caused by the seedborne bacteria Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli (Xcp) and the brown-pigmented variant X. campestris pv Phaseoli var. fuscans. This is the first great northern to combine the XAN 159 and great northern Montana No. 5 sources of CBB resistance. The resistance was confirmed by the presence of previously developed SCAR markers SU91 and SAP6, tightly linked with quantitative trait loci from XAN 159 and Montana No. 5, respectively. Inoculation of ABC-Weihing with races 41, 44, 47, 49, 53, 67, 73, and 108 of Uromyces appendiculatus, the common bean rust pathogen, under greenhouse conditions at Beltsville, MD in 2004, indicated the presence of Ur-3 and Ur-6 genes for resistance to common bean rust. In addition, ABC-Weihing carries the single dominant hypersensitive I gene that provides resistance to all non-necrotic strains of the bean common mosaic virus. ABC-Weihing has partial avoidance to white mold caused by Sclerotinia sclerotium due to its semi-upright plant architecture. |
