Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is interested in the development of prebiotic carbohydrates for a number of reasons. Many of the novel carbohydrates used or proposed for use as prebiotics are made from agricultural commodities such as milk, cornstarch, sugar, or fruit, grain and vegetable processing residues. Creating new markets for these materials will enhance the agricultural sector of our economy. Additionally, the use of prebiotics in animal feeds may lead to better feed utilization and improved animal health without the use of hormones or antibiotics. And finally, prebiotics are known to have several important benefits for human health. We will discuss some ongoing research within ARS, especially at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, to convert agricultural commodities to value-added prebiotic carbohydrates.
