Degradation and bioavailability of sulfamethazine in pond water microcosms [abstract]. American Chemical Society Abstracts. p. 86. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The antibiotic sulfamethazine can be transported from manured fields to farm ponds. We investigated the degradation and fate of sulfamethazine in small pond water microcosms. 14C-phenyl-sulfamethazine was added to the pond water column in a swine manure slurry or in water. Residual concentrations in water and sediment were measured over a 63-day period. Sulfamethazine uptake by Lumbriculus variegatus was measured in the initial 14 days as an indicator of bioavailability. |
