Interpretive Summary: The California table grape industry need a series of white, red and black seedless varieties that ripen from early to late in the season so a consistent supply of high quality fruit is available to consumers throughout the season. ARS at the SJVASC, Parlier, California has a grape breeding program to develop improved varieties with larger seedless fruit suitable for shipping and storage with lower grower costs. As a result, three new varieties have been released. Sweet Scarlet provides a midseason, red seedless grape with a light fruity Muscat flavor. Its special flavor has attracted greater sales than other grapes ripening at the same time. Scarlet Royal is a midseason, red seedless grape with the traditional sweet neutral flavor. It has large fruit with a tough skin and is productive when spur pruned. It fills a gap in the season between the early ripening Flame Seedless and the late ripening Crimson Seedless. Autumn King produces a very large, white seedless berry and ripens very late. It produces fresh fruit that requires very little cultural treatments to achieve its large size and extends the season after Thompson Seedless, the standard white seedless table grape. These varieties are being planted by growers and will increase the quality of table grapes available to consumers.

Technical Abstract: The production practices for the latest table grape varieties released by ARS, SJVASC, Parlier, California are summarized along with their performance. Sweet Scarlet provides growers with a mid-season, red seedless grape with a light Muscat flavor. It has exceptional eating quality because of its taste and flesh texture. Scarlet Royal is a large red seedless, neutral flavored grape that ripens in the mid-season between Flame Seedless and Crimson Seedless. It has firm meaty flesh, a very good rachis and good storage ability. Production is very good on spur pruned vines. Autumn King is a very late white seedless grape. It has very large berries with good attachment. It is productive on canes. Storage ability is good. Sweet Scarlet, Scarlet Royal and Autumn King have been patented, released, and licensed to the California Table Grape Commission for propagation. These varieties are being produced by nurseries and planted by growers.
