Interpretive Summary: Gene sequence analysis has provided a rapid and accurate means for recognizing new yeast species and for assigning them to genetically defined genera. Discovery of new species also provides additional structure to taxonomic groups, which allows more accurate classification of species and genera. In the present study, 11 new yeast species are described. Three form ascospores and are classified in the genus Sugiyamaella. The remaining eight species do not form ascospores and are placed in the genus Candida. The discovery of these new species provides additional novel microbial germplasm for exploitation in agricultural and biotechnological research.

Technical Abstract: Eleven new yeast species from forest habitats are described based on nucleotide sequence analysis of the nearly entire large subunit ribosomal DNA, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 ribosomal DNA, mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal DNA and the cytochrome oxidase II gene. All are members of the Sugiyamaella clade. Three of the taxa are heterothallic species of Sugiyamaella and the remaining eight species are assigned to Candida because of the absence of ascospores. The Sugiyamaella species are the following: S. americana sp. nov., type strain NRRL YB-2067 (CBS 10352), mating type a, and isotype NRRL YB-4197 (CBS 10353), mating type alpha; S. chiloensis sp. nov., type strain NRRL Y-17646 (CBS 8168), mating type a, and isotype NRRL Y-27101 (CBS 5927), mating type alpha, anamorph Candida bertae; S. japonica sp. nov., type strain NRRL YB-2788 (CBS 10354), diploid, NRRL YB-2764 (CBS 10355), mating type a, and NRRL YB-2799 (CBS 10356), mating type alpha. The proposed new Candida species with their designated type strains are the following: C. floridaensis sp. nov. NRRL YB-3827 (CBS 10350), C. grinbergsii sp. nov. NRRL Y-27117 (CBS 5924), C. lignohabitans sp. nov. NRRL YB-1473 (CBS 10342), C. marionensis sp. nov. NRRL YB-1336 (CBS 10341), C. marylandica sp. nov. NRRL YB-1847 (CBS 10346), C. newmexicoensis sp. nov. NRRL YB-2450 (CBS 10349), C. northcarolinaensis sp. nov. NRRL YB-1835 (CBS 10344) and C. pinicola sp. nov. NRRL YB-2263 (CBS 10348).
