Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Recently there has been growing interest in using barley as a feedstock for fuel ethanol in the U.S. This study focused on potential of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for quality evaluation of barley as a rapid and non-destructive analytical method and calibration transfer between two instruments with different resolutions. A total of 143 barley samples were collected from different varieties, growing locations, and crop years. Starch, protein, and moisture were analyzed as main components. The samples were scanned through both dispersive monochromator and fourier transform (FT) spectrometers, and the results were compared. Calibration models developed could be used to predict barley samples with satisfactory accuracy and the prediction accuracy was comparable between the instruments. The calibration model was successfully transferred from a dispersive instrument to a FT-NIR instrument and from a FT-NIR instrument to a dispersive one with the addition of some of the transferred slave spectra to the calibration model built by the master instrument spectra.
