Interpretive Summary: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005© was used to develop an interactive liquid oxygen (LOX) calculator for fasted channel catfish. Estimates of water column temperature, estimated total fish weight, average individual fish weight, estimated diffuser efficiency, expected holding period, unit sale price for the fish, unit cost for liquid oxygen, capital investment for liquid oxygen equipment, and the pounds of production over which the capital investment will be amortized are entered via a user-friendly input form. Estimates of the volume of oxygen required by a given biomass of channel catfish, the number of gallons of liquid oxygen needed to provide that volume, and an informal benefit-cost analysis related to liquid oxygen use are presented. The primary users of the liquid oxygen calculator are channel catfish farmers and transporters of live channel catfish.
Technical Abstract: An interactive liquid oxygen (LOX) calculator for fasted channel catfish confined in grading nets or in live haul tanks has been developed, using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005©. The calculator is based on results of scientific experiments on channel catfish metabolism, and estimates oxygen consumption with respect to time and biomass, and the liquid oxygen equivalent of that volume. An informal benefit-cost analysis related to liquid oxygen use is presented.
