Technical Abstract: Several emerging chemicals were tested in 2 field trials in combination with metham sodium as replacements for methyl bromide. These included 2-bromoethanol, dimethyl disulfide, furfural, propylene oxide, and sodium azide. Populations of weed and pathogens were measured after chemical application. In the first trial the emerging chemicals had no increase in pest control over metham sodium alone. The second trial showed that these chemicals did improve the pest control performance of metham sodium. It is thought that the differences between the two trials were due the soil texture. The first trial was in a sandy soil were metham sodium performed well, whereas the second trial was in a heavier loamy soil which impeded the performance of metham sodium. The addition of the other chemicals increased the efficacy of the treatments in the second trial.
