Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Swinepox virus (SWPV) is the etiologic agent of a worldwide disease specific for swine that affect young pigs with morbidity approaching 100% in some cases. Adults generally develop a mild, self-limiting form of the disease, with lesions in hairless skin areas that remain localized at the sites of entry and infection characterized by slight fever and inflammation of local lymph nodes. The entire genome of SWPV has been sequenced, and reveals that at least 146 genes with functions in basic replication, viral virulence, host range, and immune evasion are shared with capripoxviruses. The gene complement of SWPV better defines Suipoxvirus within the Chordopoxvirinae subfamily and provides a basis for future use as a vaccine.
