Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter addresses the future of obesity treatment. To provide a foundation for discussing the future, we begin with a brief background on the importance of obesity treatment and review of current interventions. We then examine issues and controversies that we believe will affect the future of obesity treatment, including the relevance of body mass index (BMI) to healthy weight, the impact of short-term weight changes and normalization of comorbid conditions on long-term health, the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of continuous care to improve weight-loss maintenance, the shift toward more comprehensive health models in obesity treatment, and promising directions in the prevention of obesity.
